Tests on material specimens are performed at Materials Lab. The specimens typically have a well-defined geometry and dimensions in the order of 10-50 cm.

The aim is to test and measure the relations between load, deformation, damage propagation, and fracture under well-controlled loading and environmental conditions, using monitoring techniques and loading equipment capable of applying predefined loading histories.

Material testing supports different purposes, including provision of data for performance and reliability studies in structural analysis and design as well as validation of micromechanical and micro-structural optimization studies. Parameters for material models are determined through material testing. Such models are used in the simulation of the behaviour of large-scale structures, sub-structures and components.
